The use of electronic medical records (EMR) software in Saudi Arabia to store and access patients' medical records more than doubled between 2006 and 2017, while their perceptions of financial and clinical productivity after the implementation of EMR decreased, A study published today in ophthalmology.

Our findings highlight the fact that companies designing Ophthalmology EMR software in Saudi Arabia must address the efficiency and usability of those systems.
The findings were based on a series of three surveys based on questionnaires. The most recent survey, conducted between 2015 and 2016, was sent by email to 2,000 randomly selected members of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. A total of 348 (17.4 percent) ophthalmologists responded. Similar surveys were conducted in 2011 (492 respondents, or 33 percent) and 2006 (592 respondents, or 15.6 percent).

Among the respondents to the latest survey, 72 percent had implemented EMR, more than triple the rate of 10 years before (19 percent). Ophthalmology practices linked to integrated health systems, governmental or university, were more likely to have adopted EMR.

Respondents who converted from paper to electronic records were also asked about productivity changes based on the number of patients they see each day. Only about 15 percent responded in 2006 that productivity declined as a result of adopting EMR, but in 2016 more than half did so. Similarly, respondents were asked how EMR affected the overall costs of the practice: about 13 percent in 2006 felt it translated into an increase in costs, compared to 75 percent in the most recent survey.

"The surveys reveal a deep dissatisfaction with the use of EMR.”Despite their dissatisfaction, however, only a third of the ophthalmologists surveyed said they would return to paper records if they could, and more than half said they would not."
